“Perhaps the most common goal for golf course designers, and certainly Nicklaus Design, is to create a golf course that is enjoyable for all skill levels of player, but from the back tees, provides the good test of golf even the best players could envision. Most of all, you want the experience to be a memorable one, and something that will bring the golfer back time and time again. Cozumel Country Club is such a golf course. Quotes from Steve Nicklaus

“From the back tees, Cozumel will certainly challenge the low-handicap players. In fact, we feel they could stage an event at Cozumel, if that’s what they wanted to do. But being the only golf course in Cozumel, and with much of the play coming from hotels and cruise ships, the golf course must be very playable from the forward tees. It is just that.

“The golf course itself was literally carved out of the Mayan jungle. There is thick vegetation in and around the golf course, which will collect the ball. It’s a very low-profile golf course, one where we had to balance the golf course with the dirt available on site. The greens will have a feel somewhat similar to Pinehurst No. 2 or the course my father did in Jupiter, Florida, called The Bear’s Club. The greens have internal support, with grass hollows in and around the green to collect the ball. With this type of property, there were ample wetland areas that we were able to utilize in the design and strategy, as well as add some additional interest to some holes. There is also a strong balance of water on both nines, as well as bunkering, that add strategic value and aesthetics to the design.”

Cozumel Country Club- The ancient Mayan name of “Cuzamil” meant “Land of the Swallows”. Golfers will now be finding more “birdies” on Cozumel! For years Cozumel has been known for its world class reef diving. Now the spectacular inland lagoons, dense jungle vegetation and plethora of local flora and fauna surrounding this Steve Nicklaus of the Nicklaus Design Group designed 18-hole, 6,734-yard, Par 72 golf course will encourage any diver to trade in his fins for a set of clubs. Just fifteen minutes from the international pier and ten minutes from the airport, directly across from the hotels located on the northern side of the island, the Cozumel Country Club incorporates the natural habitats of the island in its design and construction. Carved out of the jungle, the fairways are built around Cozumel’s native trees, red mangroves and natural wetlands in order to preserve ecological sensitive areas. From pulverizing rock into bunker sand to hewing trees into lumber for a bridge through the mangrove swamp, this project is an environmental masterpiece. The four sets of tees allow golfers of all skill levels to enjoy their round of golf as well as the peacefulness of the natural surroundings. The complete practice facility features a driving range, putting green, as well as a chipping green with a practice bunker. Upon arriving to the club, golfers will find a rustic native palapa style clubhouse with snack bar and seating for 40 people The golf shop houses the latest in golf merchandise and is furnished with beautiful, native, mahogany fixtures crafted by a local carpenter. Nicklaus rental clubs and Footjoy rental shoes are available for the golfers who arrive without their equipment.
